ASSOCIATE OF ART IN ALCOHOL & SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING

The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling (ASAC) program prepares students for careers in substance abuse counseling in alignment with New York State requirements. Students develop professional competencies in writing, research, social-emotional analysis, and evidence-informed counseling practice.

Grounded in the Disease Model of Addiction, the program examines the biological, neurological, genetic, environmental, and social factors that contribute to addiction. Through classroom instruction and field-based learning, students gain knowledge and skills in:

• Substance use and addiction theory

• The effects of psychoactive substances

• Trauma-informed prevention and intervention strategies

• The impact of substance use disorders on families and special populations

• Prevention, treatment, and recovery approaches in individual and group settings

• The relationship between mental health and substance use disorders

• Interviewing, assessment, crisis intervention, counseling, case management, and ethical practice

The program combines academic coursework with clinical and field experiences to strengthen critical thinking, communication, self-awareness, and professional judgment. Graduates are prepared for entry-level employment in public and private human services settings and for continued professional and personal growth.

Alcohol and substance abuse counseling professionals work in prevention and treatment settings serving children, adults, families, and communities. Employment settings may include inpatient, outpatient, community-based, and residential programs.
