SP 101 Introduction to Spanish I | This course is intended for students with little or no exposure to the study of the Spanish language. Comprehension of basic principles of grammar is stressed, along with aural comprehension and development of oral communication skills. Writing of simple Spanish sentences is done from the beginning of the course so that a certain facility with the written language might be obtained within the course of the semester. This course is not for students who have taken the Spanish Regents’ examination in high school. This course fulfills the Foreign Culture and Language General Education requirement. |
SP 102 Introduction to Spanish II | This course is a continuation of SP 101 which stresses basic principles of grammar, aural comprehension and development of oral communication skills. Writing of simple Spanish sentences is continued as part of the course. This course is not intended for students who have completed three or more years of high school Spanish. This course fulfills the Foreign Culture and Language General Education requirement. |
SP 201 Intermediate Spanish I | Fulfills Gen Ed: Foreign Culture and Language |
SP 202 Intermediate Spanish II | Building on grammar and vocabulary learned in SP 201, this intermediate course continues the focus on grammar and vocabulary and increasing competence in the four linguistic skills and gaining an overview of Hispanic cultures. There is an emphasis on communication skills with the exclusive use of Spanish in class. |
SP 204 Spanish Literature in Translation | Providing an overview of the cultural background and history of Spain through its literature, this CORE I course surveys Spanish literature from the medieval period to Cervantes’ Don Quijote in the early seventeenth century, with consideration of the historical and philosophical background that gave impetus to the creative spirit of some of the greatest writers of the Spanish language. |
SP 205 Spanish for Law Enforcement Officials | This course is intended for the upper-division student in the criminal justice or economic crime investigation programs, and may be of benefit to human services majors as well. It is a communication-focused course enabling students to function within a bi-lingual setting in the particular situation of law enforcement. Part of the course will entail an intensive review of grammar needed for this level of conversation. The rest of the course will focus on the oral and written communication skills allowing the professional to respond to those whose primary language is Spanish. This portion of the course will focus on conversational skills, documents, and forms used in the field and the development of the necessary vocabulary to respond in a variety of scenarios. This course is intended for students who have a working knowledge of the basic rules of Spanish grammar. |
SP 301 Conversation and Composition | Building on grammar and vocabulary learned in SP 202, this advanced - intermediate course continues the focus on grammar and vocabulary and increasing competence in the four linguistic skills and gaining an overview of Hispanic cultures. There is an emphasis on communication skills with exclusive use of Spanish in class. |
